Oil paintings
Oil painting is my specialty, ranging from loose renderings to soothing realism. With oil, it takes time. Time for the layers to settle with every session, the paint to cure with the final touches, and varnish being the last layer left behind with a brushstroke.
Pyrography
A hot pen and plywood was my first taste of wood burning. Something about it seemed so intuitive. A reminder of a time where I never touched color and only looked at things as shapes, textures, lines, and empty spaces. And yet, when the wax flowed over the grains of wood in it’s completion, with it streamed an abundance of color I dared not touch.
It was perfect just the way it was.
Pyrography holds a permanent place in my heart.
Other Media
Before there was paint and fire, it was pencil. Ink felt like a natural next step. For years I self-taught, drawing what I saw, scratching at printer paper with unfinished ideas. Acrylic paint was introduced into my space, and I used all three primary colors because I didn’t know how colors actually worked.
It wasn’t until I went to University, walking into a drawing class where kids did what I was doing at 12, that I realized I needed more than black, white, and gray. I was hungry for something more.
I found it in the oil painting studio first. A challenge I took on a whim. It was hard, it was challenging, but it fed into something I didn’t realize I needed. Watercolor was the next surprising media that challenged me to my core, but something very important happened.
My introduction to color theory led to an explosion of creative growth. It gave me spirit.
And the rest is history.
It’s so nice to meet you.
